Lorry E. Rytting, 63, former Deseret News reporter, University of Utah professor and a director for the LDS public communications department, died of cancer May 10, 1991, at his Salt Lake home.
Mr. Rytting was born in Tooele on July 21, 1927, the son of Andrew Noble and Alvaretta Davis Rytting. He was raised in Malad, Idaho, Ephraim and Tremonton, Utah. He served a mission to Great Britain for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and earned his bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University, his master's degree from the University of Utah and his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin. He married Gloria Wallis in the Logan LDS Temple on Dec. 27, 1951.While at BYU he was elected editor of the Daily Universe. He later served as a reporter for the Deseret News and as editor for several Utah weekly newspapers, including the Bear River Leader. In the 1970s, he served as an associate professor of mass communications and journalism at the University of Utah.
Mr. Rytting worked in the publication communications department for the LDS Church and established the first LDS public relations office in London in 1975. He had served as a director of LDS public communications since 1978.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 14, at 11 a.m., in the Canyon Rim 1st Ward Chapel, 3000 S. 3100 East, Salt Lake. Viewing will be Monday, May 13, 6 to 8:30 p.m. and at the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 S. Highland Drive. Friends may also call at the Canyon Rim Chapel on the day of the funeral from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m.
