The Challenger is the largest operating steam locomotive in the world. It was designed by Union Pacific, one of 105 of its kind. It was built in 1943. In 1959 the engine was retired from service and parked in Cheyenne until 1975. A group of Union Pacific volunteers restored it and in 1981 it was back on the tracks, used for special UP promotions.
