Fourteen residents of Utah's long-term health care facilities will receive recognition during National Nursing Home Week, May 12-18.

Other activities planned for the week include open houses, picnics, ribbon-cutting ceremonies and balloon releases as a way to invite community members into the homes. The week was set aside by President Bush and Gov. Norm Bangerter. "By visiting a nursing home, or by volunteering to assist someone who needs or provides long-term care, we can touch the lives of these Americans in a meaningful way," Bush wrote in a letter.

Dennis N. McFall, executive vice president of the Utah Health Care Association, hopes the week will serve as an educational tool for the community. "We want to reach people who know very little about long term care," McFall said. "We also would like to address the misconceptions."
