The University of Utah softball team pushed two runs across the plate in the first inning and they proved more than enough for junior pitcher Janet Womack (19-6), who hurled the Utes to a 2-0 victory against New Mexico in the WAC Softball Tournament Friday. Womack, named to the all-conference team and owner of a no-hit shutout against Colorado State, Thursday, pitched the Utes into the championship game, scheduled for today at 6 p.m. An 8 p.m. game will be played, if necessary. The Utes will meet the winner of the New Mexico/Creighton game, set for noon.

Utah scored its runs after Amy Cowley reached first on an error,moved to second when WAC Player of the Year Charmelle Green drew a walk and both runners advanced on Laurel Simmons' fielder's choice to second. Cowley scored on an RBI single by Deb DiMeglio (voted the WAC Freshman of the Year). Green crossed the plate after a single by all-conference first baseman Christina Freeman.The Utes' record improved to 24-12.

The winner of the WAC Championship receives an automatic berth in the NCAA Regional Tournament, May 16-18.
