A Long Island man has learned that the news doesn't just happen to other people.
Clifford Golden, 39, heard about a Suffolk County repair shop that would roll back the odometer on his 1990 Ford Probe so the auto would remain under a new car warranty, District Attorney James Catterson said Thursday. While driving there, he heard a radio report about the arrest of 69 people in a stolen-car sting operation conducted by the district attorney's office.
When Golden arrived at the shop, he told one of the "mechanics," "You've got to be careful who you deal with. I just heard something on the radio about a sting operation somewhere. Watch the news tonight."
Evidently, Golden wasn't very careful: The repair shop was the sting operation. Golden was arrested on a charge of conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, and his comments were preserved on videotape, Catterson said.
