A West Valley youth was seriously injured when a gun his friend was playing with accidently discharged.

Andrew Valdez, 14, was shot in the neck Thursday about 3 p.m. and is in serious but stable condition at Primary Children's Medical Center. The two were in a house with a .357 caliber pistol and "pointing it" at each other when the accident occurred, police said.

"They thought they had unloaded it," West Valley officer Kenny Simpson said.

The bullet traveled through the boy's neck but did not "hit anything critical," hospital spokeswoman Laura Winder said. "He was very lucky."
