A Utah State Prison parolee remained in custody Friday after the search for a suspect in a bank robbery on State Street ended with a foot chase in Taylorsville.
Salt Lake County Sheriff's deputies were notified at 9:51 a.m. Thursday that the branch of First Security Bank at 3655 S. State had been robbed by a man in his mid-20s who asked a female teller for change and then demanded all of her money."We obtained a possible vehicle description and a description of the suspect at that time, and a broadcast was made," said Detective Commander Bill Van Wagenen.
Another detective spotted a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle description and began chasing it west on 5300 South. The detective lost the vehicle in traffic but found it again, abandoned in a subdivision.
A man matching the suspect's description was then spotted on foot and chased to the Salt Lake Community College campus near 4700 South and Redwood Road. He led officers on a chase through one of the buildings on the campus and was then arrested by a swarm of 12 to 18 officers on one of the lawns.
Officers have yet to find any of the money taken during the robbery, Van Wagenen said. The amount taken has not been disclosed.
The description of the man arrested matches that given by some witnesses but not others, Van Wagenen said.
Officers are hoping pictures taken by a bank surveillance camera will help make a more positive identification on the robber, who did not wear a mask during the robbery.
