Sunset Police Chief Bruce Gunderson has decided to retire, a month after he was suspended in the wake of a former secretary's sexual harassment complaint against him.

Along with Gunderson's retirement, Mayor Norm Sant announced the pending retirements of Fire Chief Arley Wallace and Assistant Fire Chief Larry Byington at Tuesday's City Council meeting.Lt. Phil Olmstead was appointed acting police chief, a position he has been serving in since Gunderson's suspension April 5.

Sant said Gunderson told him by telephone earlier Tuesday he intended to retire, effective in two weeks.

Gunderson, 50, has an unlisted phone number and could not be reached for comment.
