The 68th annual state PTA convention will be Friday and Saturday, May 10 and 11, at Brigham Young University. More than 2,500 delegates and others are expected to attend, representing the 148,000-plus PTA members in the state.

BYU Education School Dean Dan Anderson will greet participants and State Superintendent Jay B. Taggart will address them. Representing the National PTA will be Joan Dykstra, leadership vice president and Mitchell Spivey, youth member.The state group will honor a number of educators and others who support education, including Utah Jazz star Thurl Bailey, who has been Utah's honorary membership chairman since 1989. He is a frequent speaker in Utah schools.

KSL will receive a Friend to Children Award for their local ban on liquor advertising. Debbie Hacker, Plymouth Elementary, will receive the Spirit of PTA Award and Lisa Dolan of Parklane Elementary the Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award.

Irene Lombardi, 84-year-old volunteer at Pioneer Elementary and Bernice Jensen, a great-grandmother who volunteers at Midvalley Elementary, also will receive the Friend to Children Award.

Friday evening, six outstanding educators will receive the Golden Apple Award. They will also receive Apple computers. KUED and Educators Mutual are co-sponsors of the dinner event.

Saturday, May 11, a youth "convention within a convention" will be held with student delegates from throughout the state participating in workshops and other activities.
