Three Cougars hope to secure NCAA qualifying marks this Saturday at the Modesto Relays in California. Brent Patera will attempt to qualify in the discus, and Russ Muir and Jason Pyrah will run in the 1,500 meters. Cougar sprinter Frank Fredericks and hammer thrower Per Karlsson are the only BYU thinclads to have achieved NCAA qualifying marks thus far.

Patera threw a toss of 188-10 last weekend at Los Angeles to improve on his provisional NCAA mark. The NCAA automatic qualifying mark is 191-11.Pyrah clocked a 3:46.96 and Muir a 3:47.36 last weekend at Los Angeles. The NCAA automatic mark in the 1,500 is 3:41.50 and the provisional is 3:45.0.
