Marilyn Johnson, Buena Vista, Colo., center, and others work with a variety of colors and shapes in designing folk art during the Society of Decorative Painters' 19th annual convention, which runs through Saturday in the Salt Palace. More than 3,000 painters from throughout the United States, Japan, Canada and Germany have gathered to learn more about the art of painting on wood, leather, plastic, glass and ceramic. The painters will display and sell their work to each other, to major retailers and to the public. "Decorative painting is a large part of my life. It has been absolutely wonderful, including the association with other painters and developing my skills," said Martha Collins, Rockport, Summit County. Many displays are open to the public.
