First there was Schwarzkopf the war hero. Now there is Schwarzkopf the elementary school.
The Hillsborough County (Fla.) School Board on Tuesday night named its newest proposed elementary school after Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, the commander of allied forces in the Persian Gulf war.Schwarzkopf lives in Tampa and is based at MacDill Air Force Base.
"Wouldn't it be wonderful for this county to be the first to name a school after the general?" asked School Board chairwoman Marion Rodgers before the vote was taken.
A majority of the other board members quickly agreed.
Several other names were considered for the school, among them those of local educators. Another candidate for the name was Calusa Trace, the upscale subdivision in north Hillsborough where the $6 million school will be located. It is to open in December 1992.
The board agreed to send a letter to Schwarzkopf relaying the decision.
Rodgers urged fellow board members to vote for the popular general - even though some of them had trouble spelling his name on their ballots.
