Oregon Democrats are thinking about trying to recall Republican Sen. Mark Hatfield over his initial failure to report nearly $20,000 in gifts and free travel.

"The question becomes the ability to put a whole recall effort together given our limited resources," party Executive Director Paddy McGuire said Tuesday in a telephone interview. The Democrats would have to get 150,000 signatures on the recall petitions and overcome a 1935 state attorney general's opinion that Oregon's congressmen and senators are exempt from recall.

The Justice Department is reviewing Hatfield's acceptance of $9,265 worth of artwork plus $5,000 in free air travel from the former president of the University of South Carolina in the 1980s while the school was vying for federal grant funds.
