Four Utah schools are being honored by Utah PTA for exceptional volunteer programs for 1990-91.
Sunrise Elementary PTA, Jordan District, will receive the Outstanding Volunteer Program Award. The school has 250 classroom volunteers who donated 5,000 hours during the year. In addition, 72 room mothers helped with a self-esteem program, involving 40 PTA board members and more than 100 additional volunteers. Among other projects, they promoted the Great Books program, vision and hearing screening, Nutrition Week and emergency preparedness.Westvale Elementary PTA, also in Jordan District, is the Outstanding Community Involvement Program winner. Each month, the PTA featured a project for the theme "Youth's Salute to Service." Each project involved the entire community.
Mount Ogden Middle School PTSA also won the Outstanding Community Involvement recognition for a mock disaster drill. The community participated with support services and medical assistance to help school neighborhoods prepare for a disaster.
Magna Elementary PTA is recognized for its parent involvement program. The school conducted an extensive needs assessment with parents, sponsored a "Make It-Take It" creative project to help parents make learning materials. A Lunch and Learn activity helped parents learn to deal effectively with children and junior high students were enlisted to help with a tutoring program.
The schools will be honored during the PTA state convention Saturday, May 11.
