Shawn L. Durrant of Harrisville, Weber County, was among 16 people recently recognized as heroes by the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission.

Durrant scaled a 40-foot tower to save a 5-year-old girl who was dangling from her mother's grasp in a ski-lift chair on Jan. 29, 1990, in Liberty, Weber County.Durrant has joined the more than 7,500 Americans and Canadians honored by the commission since its founding by Pittsburgh industrialist Andrew Carnegie in 1904. More than $19 million has been awarded in one-time payments and pensions to heroes or their survivors.

Each winner gets $2,500, a leather-bound certificate and a medallion. The winners are recognized for risking their lives to try to save others.
