A California man killed in a one-vehicle accident Monday afternoon four miles south of Nephi has been identified by the Utah Highway Patrol.
Dead is Arthur Herkowitz, 59, Sylmar, Calif.Trooper Lance Bushnell said the cause of the accident had not yet been determined. Whether Herkowitz left the highway because he fell asleep at the wheel or because of a medical problem has not been decided, said Bushnell.
Herkowitz was northbound on I-15 when his vehicle left the freeway on the right side, said Bushnell. Herkowitz then apparently overcor-rected and the car spun three-fourths of a turn and struck a containment fence. The car went into a culvert and rolled one and a half times, partially ejecting Herkowitz through the rear window of the car, Bushnell said.
The car landed upside down and Herkowitz was pinned beneath his vehicle.
Bushnell said there were seven or eight volunteers at the scene who helped raise the car so Herowitz could be removed.
Herkowitz was dead at the scene, said Bushnell.
