A Phoenix-based pet store chain says it is looking at coming into Utah with a group of retail outlets.

Don Dorsey, senior vice president of Petsmart Inc, a privately owned operator of 23 pet "superstores" in Arizona, Colorado and Texas, said the company is currently looking for as many as five store sites in Salt Lake City, Ogden and Provo. The average Petsmart store is 25,000 square feet.The local real estate agent is Consolidated Realty Group, Salt Lake City.

Dorsey said the first Petsmart store in Utah could open late this year but that no decision on sites will be made before July.

The company is also looking at expanding in New Mexico, Oklahoma and Missouri. No franchise operations are currently being sold.

The stores do not sell dogs, cats or any other mammals but carry a variety of birds, fish and all kinds of pet-related merchandise.
