Federal authorities arrested a political foe of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on Saturday and accused him of conspiring to murder India's top badminton player after having an affair with the sportsman's wife.

Opposition leaders said the suspect, Sanjay Singh, was the victim of a political vendetta. He also was defended by the 24-year-old wife of the badminton star.Singh, 32, was arrested in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh state, in connection with the July 28 slaying of Syed Modi, 28, India's top-ranked badminton player, said an official of the Central Bureau of Investigation.
