A 56-year-old man broke into his estranged wife's home, tortured her with a soldering iron to give her something to "remember" him by and shot himself twice, killing himself, police said.
The man, who had been ordered by the courts to stay away from his wife following an April 25 beating, broke into the house about 1 a.m. Sunday, police reports said. After beating her with his fists, the man tied the 47-year-old woman's hands behind her back and then dragged her into an attached garage, where he placed her on a workbench.
He used the soldering iron to burn her upper thighs and groin area badly enough to cause red marks, but not blisters, the reports said.
The man then unplugged the soldering iron, wrote a short suicide note, placed the gun beneath his chin and fired.
The bullet shot away part of the man's jaw, but did not kill him. The woman fled the garage and was halfway to a neighbor's home when the man shot himself a second time in the head, killing him, police said.
