Hugs, tears and ribbons marked the Saturday night return of 95 members of the Utah National Guard 625th Military Police Company.
The soldiers arrived at the Salt Lake International Airport shortly after 9 p.m. on United Airlines flight 1494.The unit was activated Dec. 6, and sent to Saudi Arabia to participate in Operation Desert Storm. It helped guard 25,000 Iraqi prisoners of war captured during the ground war, said Lt. Col. Bob Nelson.
The unit arrived at Ft. Lewis, Wash., Thursday and began demobilization processing on Friday, he said. Some members of the unit remain in the Persian Gulf to assist in transporting the unit's equipment home, Nelson said. "They will return home in two to three weeks."
Utah's 419th Transportation Company and 321st Medical Detachment will return to Utah shortly. Both units are part of the 96th U.S. Army Reserve Command. The 419th Transportation Company returns to Fort Lewis Sunday.
