After an absence of six years from the sulfate of potash market, Great Salt Lake Minerals has regained its title as the largest producer and marketer of that product in North America.

The company's exit was caused by flooding and an attempt to rebuild solar ponds on Great Salt Lake. The company is producing more than 200,000 tons of potash, and two-thirds of the total is exported.Since the company stopped producing potash, China became the largest user of potash, which is used as a fertilizer to produce crops for expanding populations, especially in Asian countries. China has purchased $15 million worth of the $23 million in potash GSL has produced.

Company officials said the exporting means a $66 million boost to the Wasatch Front economy. They said an expansion program has started and should be completed within four years.
