A Utah State Prison inmate on parole has been charged with 12 counts of theft in a pallet-selling scheme that netted him more than $17,000 last fall.

Gary R. Winger, 28, pleaded not guilty in 2nd District Court to 12 counts of theft by deception, all second-degree felonies that carry a prison term of one to 15 years.According to court records, Winger was working for a pallet manufacturing firm last fall while on parole from the prison. The counts charge him with submitting false sales invoices to the firm claiming sales of pallets to a Smith's supermarket in Bountiful.

The pallet company paid Winger a commission on the sales but when the store was billed for the pallets, the company discovered no sale had taken place, according to court documents.

Winger pleaded not guilty to the 12 charges and is scheduled for trial May 23 with a May 14 pre-trial hearing.
