The LDS Church will commemorate the restoration of the priesthood at a special fireside this evening at 6 in the Salt Lake Tabernacle.
More than 6,000 men and young men 12 years of age and older of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will attend the gathering, which will be broadcast live via satellite to gatherings throughout the United States and Canada, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.It will be rebroadcast on the church's satellite system and will also be telecast at 8 p.m. on KBYU-TV (Channel 11).
The fireside will be under direction of the First Presidency and will include speakers from that body, the Council of the Twelve, the presidency of the Quorums of the Seventy and the general presidency of the Young Men organization. Three young priesthood holders from Ireland, the Philippines and Brazil will be featured in a videotape.
Music will be provided by a priesthood chorus from the church's Orem Utah Southwest Region.
The church teaches that Joseph Smith received the priesthood from heavenly messengers beginning in the spring of 1829, leading to the formal organization of the church April 6, 1830.
