The law enforcement Torch Run for the Utah Special Olympics is slated for Monday, May 20, and will extend from the State Capitol to Draper Park.

"Each year the torch run gets bigger and better and gives law enforcement personnel a chance to get involved in a very positive role in the community," said Salt Lake County Sheriff Aaron Kennard. The sheriff's office is the state law enforcement sponsor for this year's event.

In a letter to his office members, Kennard said, "Remember, this is not a race. We will be going about one mile each, running in groups. If you want to run more, feel free to continue on as far as you would like."

The run will begin at the Capitol at 8 a.m. on May 20. An adopt-a-cop program can earn participants awards if they obtain sponsors to donate. Those wishing to sponsor a runner may contact the sheriff's coordinator, Detective Doug Townsend, at 535-5286.
