A Washington state lawyers' group has voted to cancel plans for a 1992 conference in the Idaho Panhandle, in part because of the proximity of a neo-Nazi compound.
The Young Lawyers Division of the Washington State Bar Association had planned to hold next year's midyear meeting at the Coeur d'Alene Resort, 30 miles east of Spokane, Wash., in April 1992.The white supremacist Aryan Nations compound at Hayden Lake is located just north of Coeur d'Alene.
"Being an African American, it just isn't worth attending in another state where I fear for my personal safety," said Lawrance Edwards, a Seattle attorney and division trustee. "This is how I think other people of color in King County feel."
But the division president, Robert Bakemeier of Seattle, said the Coeur d'Alene conference was canceled because the northern Idaho location was inconvenient for Western Washington attorneys. The bar association also decided earlier this year to discourage out-of-state conferences.
