Sen. Jake Garn, R-Utah, is urging Utah youths to plan now to apply to one of the nation's military academies for the 1992 school year.

He said young men and women seeking nominations to the Air Force, Merchant Marine, Navy and U.S. Military academies should apply no later than Nov. 29 for the class entering in June 1992. Final selection will be completed by January 1992.Garn said candidates for his nomination must be U.S. citizens, residents of Utah, unmarried, have no children and must be at least 17 but not older than 22 on July 1 of the year of admission. All applicants must also take the SAT or ACT exams.

Garn said members of Congress make nominations based on ACT and SAT scores, class rank, grade-point average, school history, extracurricular activities, leadership potential, motivational qualities and personal recommendations.

Interested individuals may contact Garn's office at 4225 Federal Building, Salt Lake City, 84138 or call it at 524-5933.

Garn, a retired Air National Guard general, said, "The remarkable skill and training of our armed services personnel truly is one of our greatest assets.

Their performance during the recent crisis in the Persian Gulf was outstanding."

He added, "Many of these fine individuals received their training at one of our prestigious military academies. I hope their success will serve as an example to students who are interested in pursuing a military education."
