Chilling winds sweeping up the canyon followed by a heavy snowstorm failed to stop BYU senior Lachell Simmons, Sandy, from shooting a 4-over-par 76 to lead the first round of the women's WAC golf championship Thursday at the Hobble Creek golf course.
Playing in the next-to-last group, Simmons had mastered the brisk winds through the first 16 holes for even par. But as she approached the 17th tee, thick flakes of snow blanketed the mountain course, and she came in with a triple-bogie seven on No. 17 and a bogie six on No. 18.Only three other players managed to break 80 - Lisa Christie of BYU, Tracy May of UNM and Wendy Kaupp of San Diego State all had 79s to tie for second.
Tied for fifth with 81s were Robin Barry of BYU, Paula Brotsky of UNM and Carolyn McMullen of Wyoming.
