Students of Horizon Elementary School, 5180 S. 700 West, were allowed to play hookey Thursday morning - thanks to a problem in the city's underground power lines.
More than 500 city residents in the southwest part of the city from Murray Boulevard to the Jordan River lost power at 4:40 a.m. and were without electricity for six hours. The outage didn't affect all houses in that area. Many students were notified of the outage before leaving for school. Others arrived and were sent home - if their parents could be notified. Others were kept at the school, according to Dave West, assistant superintendent, Murray School District.
The school planned to reopen shortly before noon Thursday after power was restored.
Murray Power Department officials said the problem was in an underground line.
