Negotiators reported progress Thursday in talks on the future of key U.S. military bases in the Philippines.

Technical committees "narrowed down considerably" differences on defense cooperation and the Status of Forces Agreement on the fourth day of the discussions, said Alfredo Bengzon, deputy chief of the Philippine panel.Still to be resolved in the sixth round of talks between panels headed by U.S. special negotiator Richard Armitage and Philippine Foreign Secretary Raul Manglapus were the major issues of compensation and duration.
