The University of Utah bowed out of the team competition of the Western Athletic Conference Tennis Championships on Tuesday, losing to the University of New Mexico, 5-2.

The loss dropped the No. 3 seeded Utes into a playoff Wednesday with No. 4 seeded University of Texas-El Paso for third place. Top seeded San Diego State was to meet UNM, the No. 2 seed, for the team title.Brigham Young University lost in the opening round, but beat bottom-seeded Colorado State, 5-1, in the race for 5th with Air Force.

The Utes won only two of six matches in singles. Ed Perogrino beat Thomas Wall, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, and Jason Muterspaw beat Roy Canada, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Chris Entzel, Jeff Weichers, Chris Reilly and Graene Cox all lost in straight sets.

The Lobos wrapped up the title by winning one doubles match.

Individual play was scheduled to begin following the end of team play on Wednesday. Individual finals will be played Saturday.
