Brighton coasted to a 7-0 victory over the Murray Spartans Tuesday night, earning the Bengals the 1991 AAA state hockey title.
Three Bengals had four-point outings, including Jeff Zahniser, who scored two goals and two assists. Kerry Miles scored a goal and three assists, with his power play goal at the end of the second period putting Brighton up 2-0. Forward Todd Nate also had one goal and three assists.Murray goaltender Jay Stevens made 30 saves, yet the Spartans were hampered by penalties, especially in the third period.
Although the Bengals have been a dominant force in prep hockey the past several years, Brighton has not won a state title for three years. This was the second win over Murray in the double elimination tournament, with the Bengals defeating the Spartans 5-2 Saturday, forcing Tuesday's championship match.
