A Duchesne man accused of killing a bar patron and wounding a woman has been found competent to stand trial on a charge of first-degree murder.

Elmer McCrary, 67, appeared before 8th District Judge Dennis Draney following a 30-day psychiatric examination at Utah State Prison.Based on mental evaluations, Draney on Monday declared the retired oil field worker competent to assist in his own defense.

Defense attorney Ken Anderton had requested the appointment of psychiatrists to determine if McCrary suffered diminished capacity at the time of the April 29 shooting.

McCrary is charged in the shooting of Larry Mortensen, 42, of Duchesne and attempted murder in the wounding of Sandra Burnett, 37, of Hannah.
