A federal arbiter awarded Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co. $107 million in damages after ruling that Johnson & Johnson infringed on 3M's patents for a new fiberglass medical casting tape.

Former federal magistrate Janice Symchych found Tuesday that Johnson & Johnson copied 3M's Scotchcast Plus in 1987 to produce a nearly identical fiberglass tape.Symchych set damages at $53.6 million, then doubled that amount. She said Johnson & Johnson's willful infringement warranted the higher amount. Symchych's order also forces Johnson & Johnson to stop selling the tape or pay royalties.
