The University of Utah tennis team stepped out lively, while the team from Brigham Young University fell flat Monday in opening matches of the Western Athletic Conference championships.
Utah, the defending WAC champs and seeded No. 3 in this event, required only singles play to soundly whip Air Force, 5-1. Meanwhile, No. 4 seeded UTEP beat No. 5 seeded BYU by the same score in six singles matches.The Utes were scheduled to play No. 2 seeded New Mexico on Tuesday, while UTEP is slated to play No. 1 San Diego State. The Aztecs advanced easily over Colorado State, 6-0.
Team finals will be Wednesday. Individual doubles and singles play will start Wednesday and continue through Saturday.
Utah's only loss to the Cadets was at No. 1 singles where Dan Oosterhous beat Chris Entzel, 7-5, 6-1. The Utes then swept the remaining five matches as Ed Peregrino, Jeff Weichers, Chris Reilly, Jason Muterspaw and Graeme Cox all won.
BYU's only win came at No. 2 singles where George Chingas beat Anders Skold, 0-6, 6-3, 6-3.
