Felony theft charges were filed Monday against the Salt Lake County gas station clerk who mysteriously disappeared last week.

Robert E. Lindsay, 28, 4778 S. 1815 West, was charged with theft and theft pursuant to a rental agreement, both second-degree felonies.Lindsay was originally believed to have been kidnapped from Phillips 66 gas station, 4216 S. Redwood, where he worked as a part-time clerk from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. A manager arrived at the 24-hour store about 6 a.m. Thursday and found the doors locked and a sign saying the store would be closed until 6 a.m.

Lindsay, his vehicle and between $3,000 and $4,000 cash were missing from the cash registers and safe.

Investigators stopped considering the case a kidnapping after his vehicle was found over the weekend at Thrifty Car Rental, 2400 W. North Temple. A car rental employee said Lindsay showed up at the business about 4:50 a.m. Thursday and rented a Dodge Spirit for two days, according to court documents.

Neither Lindsay nor the rented vehicle has been seen since.
