A passenger train derailed near Athens Friday, killing seven people and injuring 50 others, including five Americans, the semiofficial Athens News Agency said Friday.

The accident occurred at about noon when three of the five cars jumped the rails at Kinetta, about 25 miles west of Athens. Hours later, some passengers were still trapped in the wreckage.The wounded included five Americans, two French, one British and one Spanish traveler, all believed to be tourists. All were hospitalized, ANA said.

Hospital sources identified the Americans as Richard and David Baby, David Sutton, Angela Hayen, and Simon Tames. Their addresses were not immediately available.

The cause of the accident was under investigation.
