North Korean President Kim Il Sung proposed on Monday a ban on testing and production of nuclear weapons for all of the Korean peninsula, reports said.

"The test and production of nuclear weapons must be banned, the existing nuclear weapons must be reduced and all nuclear weapons must be completely abolished," the Communist leader was quoted as saying.Kim's remarks, at a general meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Union that opened today in the North Korean capital, were reported by South Korean pool reporters and by the official North Korean news agency, which released the remarks in Tokyo.

South Korea sent 25 representatives to the conference, the first legislative delegation to visit North Korea since the division of the peninsula in 1945.

The Soviet Union, China, Japan and United States have been concerned over reports that North Korea will have capability to produce nuclear weapons by the mid-1990s.
