A radical student set herself on fire Monday and tens of thousands of others battled with riot police and held rallies to protest the fatal beating of a student protester by police.
The protesters demanded the ouster of President Roh Tae-woo and his Cabinet as the rallies grew into the largest outbreak of anti-government demonstrations this year.Friday's beating death of 20-year-old Kang Kyung-dae grabbed national attention and left the government scrambling to contain political damage.
Students rallied Monday at dozens of campuses across the nation to express outrage at Kang's death. Clashes were reported on many campuses.
At least five students were reported seriously injured, including the woman who set herself afire.
In the capital, riot police, backed by water cannons, fired volleys of tear gas when 30,000 demonstrators with a large portrait of Kang tried to march out of Yonsei University after an evening rally.
