Substance abuse and its effects on the family are the subjects of a Thursday, May 9, conference at Weber State University.

Tim Burns, a national expert, will be the featured speaker. Other guests include Al Coons, scout for the Chicago Cubs and Seattle Mariners, and Jerry Bond, a professional football player.Both professionals and the public are invited to the daylong conference, which will begin at 8 a.m. Fee is $35. Registration deadline is May 3.

A free general session will begin at 7 p.m. that evening. A panel will address drug use among athletes, treatment and how young athletes can avoid the pressures.
