Could Duffy Waldorf be 100 times better in the 1991 Greater Greensboro Open than he was in last year's tourney? He's working on it.
Waldorf, whose third-round 81 last year led to a final score of 300 and a check for $2,562, tied the Forest Oaks Country Club record Saturday with a 9-under-par 63. His 12-under-par 204 total gave him a share of the lead with first-round leader Bob Wolcott and an eye on the $225,000 first prize, a vast change from last year's take-home pay.Lanny Wadkins and Gene Sauers, co-leaders at the midway point of the $1.25 million tournament, are two shots back at 10-under-par 206.
And in Houston, George Archer used an accurate putter to record nine birdies and shoot a course-record 64 on Saturday to share the lead in the Doug Sanders Celebrity Classic with Mike Hill.
Archer, with an opening round 68, and Hill, the first round co-leader, have two-round totals of 132, a tournament record. Hill had his second straight 66.
The pair have a 3-shot lead over Bobby Nicholls, a 135 after a 67.
