Utah's winning "mathletes," four seventh- and eighth-grade students, will represent the state in national competition Friday, May 3, in Washington, D.C.

The students are Makani Mason, Butler Middle School; Hardy Swift and Marc Nielson, West Extended Learning Program; and Anna Mitros, Churchill Junior High School.The five top teams in recent state competition came from Butler, West and Churchill, all Salt Lake City schools; Bingham Junior High, Copperton; and Canyon View Junior High, Orem. The Utah sponsors of the MathCounts program are the Utah Society of Professional Engineers, CH2ML Hill, Utah Power & Light Co., Signetics, Kennecott Copper, Evans & Sutherland Computer and Amoco Oil.

The national winner will receive an $8,000 scholarship; second place, $6,000 and third, $4,000.
