A pilot escaped serious injury about 8:45 p.m. Thursday while attempting to land a light plane at the Vernal Airport.

Grant Russell Wilson, 55, of California, was treated for bruises at Ashley Valley Medical Center and released, Uintah County Sheriff Lloyd Meacham said. The sheriff said Wilson, who was en route to Vernal to go camping and was alone in the plane, was on a landing approach when one wing of the single-engine airplane hit the runway. The craft then "popped back over, disintegrating the left wheel, then spun around several times as it continued down and before coming to rest on the runway," Meacham said.
