Safety experts say that thousands of log splitters sold under the "Bark Buster" brand name should be removed from service because they can injure and even kill users.

Bark Busters have been blamed in the death of at least one person and for injuries to at least four, the Consumer Products Safety Commission said. But CPSC said it did not order the recall of the devices because of the low number that were distributed.

Four companies made Bark Busters and about 8,000 were sold nationwide from 1977 through 1988. They are no longer in production.
