Police Chief Daryl Gates, faced with ouster attempts over the videotaped beating of a motorist by his officers, will continue in his job for now while the courts continue to debate his future.

Amid shouts of "Take the Gestapo chief out!" by Gates' detractors, Superior Court Judge Ronald Sohigian said Thursday the issue was too complex for him to resolve on the spot.He set another hearing for May 1.

The effort to oust Gates began soon after King, a black motorist, was beaten by white officers who pulled him over for speeding. A man with a video camera recorded the incident, which was broadcast nationally on televison.
