The key defense witness in the assault and kidnap trial of Winnie Mandela testified Tuesday that Mandela was visiting her the night the alleged crimes took place.

The testimony by witness Nora Moahloli backed up Mandela's alibi that she had left town to visit Moahloli before the crimes allegedly occurred. But Moahloli admitted that records she kept at the time did not directly reflect that Mandela had been with her.Mandela earlier testified she left her home in Johannesburg's black township of Soweto between 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Dec. 31, 1988, at least an hour before two of her self-described victims testified she punched and whipped them and two other black males in the house.
