Jet fighter of the future An artist's drawing shows the YF-22 Advanced Tactical Fighter prototype being developed by the Lockheed/General Dynamics/Boeing team. Northrop Corp. is also designing a prototype, competing to become kingpin of the aircraft industry by winning the bid for the government's last major expenditure in an era of declining defense spending. The plane will replace the nation's F-15s as the leading attack plane in the world with the ability to "supercruise" or fly at supersonic speed without afterburners.
