Kirk Douglas didn't make it to New York to cross swords with co-star Tony Curtis at the premiere of the newly restored version of "Spartacus," but he did send a note. "I'm sorry that I cannot share the excitement of this evening with you and my co-stars," Douglas wrote. "I'm proud that . . . a whole new generation of filmgoers will be able to enjoy `Spartacus' in its original splendor."
Another "Spartacus" star, Jean Simmons, was on hand, as were Martin Scorsese, actress Mary Beth Hurt and her husband, director Paul Schrader, Jane Alexander, Tony Roberts, Paul Sorvino, Lainie Kazan and Larry "Bud" Melman.
