Rep. Bill Orton, D-Utah, has been named to a special task force to review the performance of the Resolution Trust Corp., the government agency charged with oversight of savings and loans.

Orton was one of a handful of House Banking Committee members who voted earlier this year to continue funding of the RTC - which he said is needed to continue cleaning up failing S&Ls. Many members, however, feared voting for anything remotely connected with the S&L scandal could be suicide politically.Orton's vote apparently resulted in the new assignment.

Rep. Frank Annunzio, D-Ill., chairman of the House Banking Subcommittee on Financial Institutions Supervision, wrote Orton, "I was deeply impressed with the contributions that you made to the RTC funding legislation, and it was for that reason that I appointed you to the task force."
