A leading Egyptian opposition newspaper reported Saturday that 20 army officers were executed in Sudan for leading a failed attempt to overthrow the regime of Lt. Gen. Omar Hassan Al Bashir earlier in the week.

The Al Wafd newspaper, spokesman for the opposition Al Wafd party, also said the interior mininster in Al Bashir's government, Faisal Mohammed Saleh, was arrested for opposing the executions.The attempted overthrow occured Monday on the first day of Muslims Eid, marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, the newspaper said.

The newspaper report, which could not be verified by independent sources, said the executions were carried out after "summary trials" hours after the plot was uncovered.
