An 80-year-old former member of the State Water Resources Board has confessed to forging signatures on a petition supporting the formation of a proposed Cache County water conservancy district.

Marion Olsen of Paradise was arraigned Friday in 1st Circuit Court on five counts of class A misdemeanor forgery.Olsen, a member of the Cache County Water Development Committee, told Judge Clint Judkins he is "solely responsible" for the forged names on three pages of petitions circulated among district supporters.

Last month, opponents discovered the suspected forgeries while scrutinizing the petitions, which have been in circulation for nearly three years.

In January, a petition opposing the district was dismissed by 1st District Judge Gordon Low because it didn't contain enough names of property owners in the tiny town of Amalga.
